In the previous lesson, I told you that point 5 is the 'golden point' of backgammon. Now it's time to explain why.
Look at the starting position: you already have 5 checkers on point 6. Point 5 right next to it is empty. If you can place 2 checkers there, you'll have two consecutive points at the heart of your home board — the beginning of a prime.
The world's greatest players are unanimous: point 5 is the most important point to build. Openings that build it immediately (like 3-1) are considered the luckiest rolls in the game.
